About Towns (TOWNS)
Towns, a decentralized, open-source messaging protocol built on the Base network. It enables users to create and manage programmable communication spaces called “Spaces,” which feature end-to-end encrypted messaging, on-chain memberships, and customizable access controls. These Spaces are designed to give communities full control over their data, privacy, and engagement policies without reliance on centralized intermediaries.
The protocol uses an EVM-compatible Layer 2 chain, decentralized off-chain stream nodes, and smart contracts. In April 2025, Towns Protocol raised $10 million in a Series B funding round led by a16z crypto, with participation from Coinbase Ventures and Benchmark.
